William Buchanan Doan, a resident of Florida for over fifty years, died March 5, 2013, in Melbourne, FL. Mr. Doan was born May 5, 1924, in Memphis, TN to John Frank Doan and Ruth Lester Doan; his siblings included an older brother, John Frank Doan, Jr. and an older sister, Harriet Doan Govan; and friend, George Wilson Coxwell, all deceased.
Living relatives include Harriet Doan Govan, Jr., and her husband Peter Yaun of Saint Simons Island, GA; Richard Cartwright Govan, Jr., and his wife Lori Brotherton Govan of Chattanooga, TN; John “Buddy” Doan and his wife, Teresa Horton Doan of Murfreesboro, TN; Marianne Doan and her husband, Steve Kennedy of Zionville, NC; and Richard Doan of Arden, NC.
As a life member of the American Institute of Architects, Mr. Doan was associated with various architectural firms throughout his career including the firm that designed Rockefeller Center and the United Nations Building as well as firms involved with additions and renovations of the State Capitol in Tallahassee and The Breakers in Palm Beach. After serving for three years in Patton’s Army through the Battle of the Bulge, Mr. Doan attended Cornell University in the College of Architecture where he was a
member of Theta Delta Chi, L’Ogive & Gargoyle and Tau Beta Phi, a scholastic honorary society. His thesis was “A New Zoo for Memphis,” which at the time drew rave reviews from the City of Memphis. As a honor graduate from Cornell, Mr. Doan was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for further study in Paris.
